THE MOST ATMOSPHERIC HORROR-FILM EVER MADE! (Skinamarink Movie Review)

Writer: Eamon’s Gaming & Movie CommentariesEamon’s Gaming & Movie Commentaries

If you’re a fan of horror movies or just creepy/disturbing movies in general, then you’ll love “Skinamarink!” Just picture “The Blair Witch Project '' and “Eraserhead” put together…… and you’ve got Skinamarink. The plot is simple but really effective with expressing what it’s trying to achieve…which is to scare the audience as much as possible without showing anything.

The actual plot of this film is two little children wake up in the middle of the night to find that their father and mother are missing and the doors and windows in the house are vanishing right before their eyes. I will admit, this movie is a little too long and there are repeats of the same shot… and some might think it’s as boring as watching paint dry, however it makes up for it by showing us (the audience) something completely disturbing and unsettling after a while.

I can’t really comment much on the quality of the movie because it’s very, very low budget and there’s no background music either… and it was literally recorded on a 1995 VHS CamCorder. The budget for the entire film was only $15,000… but that’s partly why I liked it so much… I never thought I’d see a (well-made) super low budget horror movie like “The Blair Witch Project” and “Paranormal Activity” and “Eraserhead” ever again and the fact that it’s making a decent amount of money in theaters is really exciting. This movie is fantastic… but you must lower your expectations before watching since everything in this movie is scarier that way.

There’s a number of things I didn’t like about this movie…… these things include staying on certain shots too long that aren’t relevant or even important to the story, the fact that you could barely hear what the characters are saying due to the fuzzy camcorder audio, there’s really only two scenes where you see the characters faces, it ends very, very, very abruptly and it’ way too long. After my viewing of this movie… I could only pay attention to the things that annoyed me about it, then the more I thought about it… the more fear I felt, also the movie made up for these things by placing unexpected jumpscares in weird/very odd places…… and usually jumpscares don’t frighten me, but since these jumpscares weren’t as expected, they scared me a lot more.

It’s difficult to talk about characterization in this movie because there’s only two main characters and they’re both five years old… but I will say, I didn’t want these characters to get hurt or killed in any way because these two kids have been through a lot throughout this entire film and they’re probably mentally scarred for life. So, while watching this movie, I was hoping that an adult would rescue them from they’re long-lasting-peril. This movie is very smart, so it doesn’t rely on the performances of two child-actors… it’s scary due to its creepy, creepy atmosphere…… and (some) occasional scary noises.

In conclusion, if you or someone you know is scared of the unknown and/or creepy atmospheric elements… then, this is the perfect movie for you! I don’t normally get scared of horror movies, but while watching “Skinamarink” in the movie theater……… I actually started sweating profusely all due to anxiety while watching it. The director of this movie, “Kyle Edward Ball,” obviously took inspiration from David Lynch’s older work because it seemed a lot like “Eraserhead,” “Blue Velvet” and even “Twin Peaks.” this is Kyle Edward Ball’s directorial debut as far as feature-length-films go…… anyway, I highly, highly recommend “Skinamarink” to fans of indie-horror movies.

MY RATING:

Skinamarink = 7/10
