This film made such a huge impact on me. It’s been years and years since a movie disturbed me this much… crime/psychological-thrillers are often disturbing in general but Se7en is NOT ONLY disturbing due to its subject matter, but to the lighting style and cinematography as well.
I won’t spoil the ending because no one’ll want to see it, but I will warn viewers that the conclusion will LITERALLY make you lose your head! (Wait, is that technically a spoiler?) Anyways, the film’s protagonists are Detective David Mills (played by Brad Pitt) and Detective Lt. Williams (played by Morgan Freeman). Detective Lt. Williams is on his way to retirement within a week just when Detective Mills decides to join an ongoing case involving gruesome murders inspired by the seven-deadly-sins. They don’t respect each other at first but eventually, they start bonding once Tracy Mills, Detective Mills’ wife (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) invites Detective Lt. Williams to supper at their small apartment. I immediately noticed an internal battle with Tracy Mills, like there was something bothering her and she just wasn’t telling anyone. I was also wondering whether or not that’d come up later in the movie……… and surely enough, it did! I won’t say what it was because then, I’d be saying too much but it does play a part later in the storyline.
This film is really fantastic but it does have two minor flaws. Number 1, Detective Lt. Williams, at first, seemed hard to figure out and by that I mean, he seemed slightly one-dimensional which led to me trying to determine whether or not he was going to be a relevant character in the story. Number 2, the setting was never mentioned throughout the entire movie which upset me a little because I couldn’t figure out where they lived and why it’s always raining. Other than those minor complaints, I loved this movie!!! The lighting fit perfectly for the tone, John Doe (who's the murderer, played by Kevin Spacey) was extremely convincing and sent shivers down my spine, every actor’s performance seemed spot-on, the ending was effectively disturbing & the pacing was perfect. I thought it was interesting how I’ve always heard the line, “what’s in the box?” but never realized it was from Se7en… and the fact that people still quote the movie after twenty-eight years is a big indicator of how iconic it is.
Overall, I think anybody (who is not too sensitive to violence) should consider watching se7en, not only because it’s a great thriller with a gut-punching climax but also because it’s so well-done and the production value is enormous! Personally, the message I took with me after watching the movie was “DON’T OPEN SUSPICIOUS BOXES… OR YOU’LL END UP LIKE DETECTIVE DAVID MILLS.”
In Conclusion I’d Rate Se7en, A Solid 8 out-of 10
