So, a few days ago I had the pleasure of watching “Elvis” in the movie theaters. I knew I would most likely enjoy this movie, mostly because I am a fan of both Elvis Presley and Baz Luhrmann but when watching movies like these (I mean biopics), about people I enjoy… I have to sort of imagine them as normal characters rather than famous people I like because my love for these celebrities might get in the way of real criticisms. With all that put aside though, I really liked this movie because it wasn‘t just the story of Elvis, it was also about his complicated relationship with Colonial Tom Parker, (his manager). Now, without further a due…… I’ll give you my full review of the movie, “Elvis”.
The movie starts after Elvis Presley’s death, with Colonial Tom Parker (his manager), being rushed to the hospital after a heart attack or
something. In the hospital he proceeds to tell us about Elvis’ tragic life and how some people blamed him for Elvis’ passing. however, it may sound like he’s trying to convince people that he’s not really the bad guy in this situation, but we later find out he is. The tragedy in “Elvis”, isn’t his death or his mothers death, the real tragedy (in my opinion) is what Elvis went through before his death. Now, the colonial acted like and convinced Elvis that he was a friend, and they worked together for years, but as time passed Elvis saw who he really was, and because of that, Elvis became bitter and careless. eventually he dies of a drug-overdose, which spread a wave of tears over the whole audience and even me. One of the more emotional scenes in this movie, is when Priscilla Presley (his ex-wife), tries to get him off drugs but sadly fails. I only have two complaints about the movie… number 1, The length of it… most biopics are really long, but this one was just way, way too long I thought, because there were some scenes they could’ve cut out, like where Elvis put tin-foil on the hospital windows because he didn’t want The sun coming in, since he suffered from major heat-exhaustion, another thing they could’ve cut out was a scene with Elvis as a kid reading comic books and fantasizing about becoming a superhero like captain marvel…… I don’t really know what the point of that was but for some reason, it still kind of worked. Complaint number 2, is most of the songs weren’t played all the way through. Elvis had a lot of great songs throughout his career, and most of them were featured in this film, but very few of them were played fully, this was probably to save time, but I would much rather hear a three minute rock song than watch Elvis put tin-foil on his windows again… I hope I’m not the only one who felt that way, but it certainly appears so. Anyway, other than those two minor complaints, I really, really liked this movie, it should be recognized as Baz’s masterpiece, but some might see it differently. Even people who aren’t fans of Elvis will enjoy this movie……… so go out to your local cinema and please see “the king“ one last time.
So, overall I’d give this movie an 7.5/10… it was a great film!
